Side A: A Day in the Life

Working closely with the UK Managing Director and the wider Marketing team, the Senior Marketing Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the release of our artist projects, both physically and digitally, from start to finish. You will initiate, plan and/or coordinate the creative marketing of projects assigned to you from inception through full release and help manage the development of the marketing assistant with your senior marketing colleagues.

This role will cover a list of mostly dance, electronic and pop/alt-pop UK and international artists, but given the diversity of Virgin Label Services, you will need to support and/or oversee projects across a wide range of musical genres. You will report to the UK Managing Director and also work closely with all UK based Virgin Music teams.

The B side: skills and experience

Be organized

  • Prepare a schedule and marketing plan for each project in collaboration with the General Manager and the project team
  • Maintain an up-to-date marketing and promotional (M&P) budget for each project, ensuring that the budget is in line with the approved marketing fund or expenses
  • Be very creative and inject marketing ideas and strategy into single project and/or album/EP campaigns.
  • Ensure that service contract marketing budgets are updated and sent regularly to the artist/management/label partner and that any budget overruns are agreed in writing
  • Liaise with artist management and inside sales team on tour stock orders for live dates, ensuring all stock is ordered in a timely manner for shows and where possible barcode scanners are provided so sales can qualify for UK grading
  • Liaise with Marketing Assistant on ticket purchases for all projects, ensuring appropriate quantities are purchased and amounts kept within marketing budgets
  • Liaise with the Marketing Assistant to plan and conduct regular campaign planning meetings for active projects, including preparing and chairing the meeting agenda and debriefing with the GM before or after the meeting
  • Working with the UK label team to ensure we maximize promotion and marketing opportunities for all artists, keeping up to date with all new developments both inside and outside of the industry that could help us maximize sales

Be analytical

  • Prepare and send regular, weekly updates on all active projects, highlighting key performance statistics, milestones and next goals
  • Closely monitor project performance on DSPs and social platforms using UMG’s suite of data tools and working closely with the team of data analysts and sales and streaming and work with the team to re-present all projects with meaningful upward momentum
  • Where applicable, mandate the UK Insight team to obtain artist audience information and liaise closely with the label’s data analyst on streaming insights and audience data

Be collaborative

  • For the Virgin Label Services roster, ensure the Principal A&R is kept closely informed of all release plans, meetings, budgets, deadlines and creative direction
  • For UK signings, liaise with production to ensure releases are set up correctly and all assets (audio, artwork, label copy) are submitted in the correct formats and in a timely manner
  • Liaise with the promotions team (internal or external) on all UK artist promotions, including radio sessions, TV performances, press interviews, ensuring costs are tightly managed within budget limitations and that the marketing team/assistant are briefed to easily organize travel and logistical arrangements (equipment rental, etc.), as required
  • Liaise with the international marketing team to keep them updated on the progress of all UK projects and, if necessary, to agree budgets for the UK
  • Liaise with the labels digital marketing team and artist management on creative ideas for the artist’s online and social media presence, influencer campaigns, D2C store, website and asset creation, ensuring that our digital campaigns always incorporate the latest innovations in formats and platforms to connect artists to audiences and the artist’s website and social media remain up to date and on the message anytime
  • Update the sales and streaming team on all project developments and provide them with the tools they need to best sell our products, eg POS/exclusive/D2C/artwork packs and accurate sales notes
  • Work closely with our UK sync manager to ensure they are fully briefed on projects as early as possible
  • Brief the Universal UK (Globe) brand partnerships and content production team on all projects and actively seek brand partnership and content platform opportunities

be creative

  • Working with our insights and data, develop creative marketing strategies and partner pitches for your artists
  • Work with artists and managers, as needed, to find agreed creative direction, including but not limited to commissioning videos, commissioning artwork, photoshoots, concept art launch/listening events, social media content and digital asset creation
  • Plan creative concepts for campaign advertising, where applicable, advise external media agencies and internal digital media agency (Fused) regarding the delivery of advertisements and artwork for TV, outdoor, print and digital campaigns
  • Monitor relevant industry awards, “ones to watch” and marketing programs for opportunities for your artist projects, preparing compelling entries/pitch/show sheets as needed
  • Develop creative brand partnership ideas to support the creative marketing ideas you have developed. work with your own network of contacts and Globe
Person specification


  • Significant and demonstrable experience in a marketing role within a record label or artist/label services company
  • Thorough understanding of the publishing and production process, for both digital and physical releases
  • Strong network of culturally appropriate marketing and creative contacts
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Efficient and able to work independently at a high level
  • Very organized
  • The ability to learn quickly and take initiative
  • Ability to remain calm when working under pressure and meeting deadlines
  • Flexible and able to prioritize a heavy workload
  • Hard worker and enthusiastic team spirit
  • Self-motivated with the ability to handle routine tasks as well as the more challenging aspects of the role
  • Passion for British and American dance, electronics and pop/alt-pop
  • Passion for contemporary culture and creative work relevant to our listing e.g. artwork and packaging design, photography, music video, lighting design, event concepts


  • Direct experience with digital marketing and social media strategy
  • Creative skills such as creating digital assets, editing, Photoshop, Powerpoint
  • A network of contacts established within the the dance, electronic and pop/alt-pop music scene would also be an advantage
  • Experience managing junior team members, e.g. interns or assistants, would be an advantage
