Roblox strikes a deal with music publishers

The National Music Publishers’ Association (NMPA) and video game platform Roblox have reached an agreement that settles any prior claims against Roblox.

The deal also “lays the foundation for future partnerships with global publishers that will unlock new creative and business opportunities on its platform,” according to a statement released by the NMPA today (September 27).

Today’s announcement follows news in June that a group of independent and major music publishers, through the NMPA, were suing Roblox for over $200 million in damages in the United States. , alleging widespread copyright infringement by the company.

That lawsuit has now been dismissed, according to the statement released today.

According to the NMPA, the agreement announced today resolves claims filed by NMPA members and also provides “industry-wide membership” open to all eligible NMPA publishers.

The agreement also opens a period of negotiation for members to individually engage in what the NMPA describes as “new licensing agreements moving forward” with global platform Roblox, which the NMPA says , “brings together millions of people through shared experiences”.

The NMPA also says the deal now extends Roblox’s existing relationships with major publishers to the entire publishing industry.
