Music business

AWAL – Paralegal (UK) – Music Business Worldwide

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a paralegal to join our London-based business affairs department, working within AWAL and Neighboring Rights (both companies recently acquired by Sony). This is a 12 month fixed term opportunity, but can progress to a permanent position depending on the business needs at that time.

This role will be primarily focused on providing the Commercial Affairs team with administrative support for all contracts and operational workflow, but may also involve some basic pro forma writing.

What you will do:
  • Support the Commercial Affairs team in executing contracts, summarizing transactions and ingesting transactions for “transfer” to other internal AWAL and Neighboring Rights teams (and associated filing)
  • Close deals on deal tracking systems (e.g. Salesforce)
  • Assist in the review of certain ancillary transaction documentation and “proprietary” aspects of related business affairs functions (e.g. letters of instruction regarding third party royalty participants, verifying that supporting documentation sent by customers to related rights purposes are complete and valid against internal checklists, etc.)
  • Assist in the drafting of certain “pro-forma” contracts and ensure their execution and implementation in our systems (e.g. licenses, initial drafts of NDAs, basic termsheets/novations, etc.)
  • Document comparison/proofreading reviews
  • Assist the team with administrative integration into The Orchard/Sony systems as needed
  • Work with Commercial Lawyers to improve efficiency and streamline processes as it relates to the department with other internal teams
  • Support AWAL lawyers with certain AWAL “DIY” platform questions that may arise from time to time, as needed
  • Support the Commercial Affairs team with options log maintenance and agreement termination processes
  • Assist with general business business information relay tasks (such as quick lookup of deal terms, legal and business research, etc.)
  • Assist the Commercial Affairs team with general administration and diary management (such as scheduling regular meetings, training sessions, legal research database, archiving and retrieving archived documents, etc.)
Who are you:
  • Preferred candidates will have paralegal or strong legal secretarial experience. Provided there is a genuine interest in the workings of the music business, exposure to the industry is not a necessity, but would be viewed favorably
  • Applications from post-LPC (or equivalent) law graduates will also be considered (but please note this is not a training contract (or equivalent role))
  • Excellent communication (both verbal and written), organizational and prioritization skills as well as attention to detail are essential
  • Applicants must be team players and be able to demonstrate collegial qualities despite often-pressured deadlines
  • Having an efficiency-oriented mindset would help
  • A real desire to learn and get involved as AWAL and Neighboring Rights activities are fully integrated into the Sony ecosystem
